Real-time low level feature extraction for on-board robot vision systems

2006

Robot vision systems notoriously require large computing capabilities, rarely available on physical devices. Robots have limited embedded hardware, and almost all sensory computation is delegated to remote machines. Emerging gigascale integration technologies offer the opportunity to explore alternative computing architectures that can deliver a significant boost to on-board computing when implemented in embedded, reconfigurable devices. This paper explores the mapping of low level feature extraction on one such architecture, the Georgia Tech SIMD Pixel Processor (SIMPil). The Fast Boundary Web Extraction (fBWE) algorithm is adapted and mapped on SIMPil as a fixed-point, data parallel imple…

Development and implementation of a selective change-driven vision sensor for high speed movement analysis

2013

Color-discrimination threshold determination using pseudoisochromatic test plates

2014

We produced a set of pseudoisochromatic plates for determining individual color-difference thresholds to assess test performance and test properties, and analyzed the results. We report a high test validity and classification ability for the deficiency type and severity level [comparable to that of the fourth edition of the Hardy–Rand–Rittler (HRR) test]. We discuss changes of the acceptable chromatic shifts from the protan and deutan confusion lines along the CIE xy diagram, and the high correlation of individual color-difference thresholds and the red–green discrimination index. Color vision was tested using an Oculus HMC anomaloscope, a Farnsworth D15, and an HRR test on 273 schoolchildr…

Development of a vision-based measurement system for relative motion compensation

2014

Masteroppgave i mekatronikk MAS 500 Universitetet i Agder 2014 Motion compensation is used in many applications where no relative motion between two objects is desired. In the offshore industry, motion compensation systems are used to increase the operational window during load transfers like crane operations or positioning of gangways for personell transfer. In most systems one or more motion reference units (MRU) are used to measure motion with respect to a world reference frame and compensate for this motion. For motion compensation between two independently moving objects, a MRU-based solution becomes complex when measurements must be exchanged and combined. Vision systems have existed …

Computational Modeling of Human Visual Function using Psychophysics, Deep Neural Networks, and Information Theory

2023

Visual perception is a key to unlocking the secrets of brain functions because most of the information is processed through the early visual system and then transmitted to the high-level cognitive perception brain regions. The brain functions as a self-organizing, bio-dynamic, and chaotic system that receives outside information and then decomposes it into pieces of information that can be processed efficiently and independently. The work connects natural image statistics, psychophysics, deep neural networks, and information theory to perceptual vision systems to explore how vision processes information from the outside world and how the information coupled drives functional connectivity be…

Hybrid foveated vision system for video surveillance and robotic navigation

2014

The primary goal of this thesis is to elaborate a binocular vision system using two different types of camera. The system studied here is composed of one omnidirectional camera coupled with a PTZ camera. This heterogeneous association of cameras having different characteristics is called a hybrid stereo-vision system. The couple composed of these two cameras combines the advantages given by both of them, that is to say a large field of view and an accurate vision of a particular Region of interest with an adjustable level of details using the zoom. In this thesis, we are presenting multiple contributions in visual tracking using omnidirectional sensors, PTZ camera self calibration, hybrid v…

What Is the Color of Milk and Dairy Products and How Is It Measured?

2020

Exactly six-hundred (600) scientific articles that report milk and milk products’ color results in scientific journals in the last couple of decades were reviewed. Thereof, the greatest part of the articles derived from Europe (36.3%) and Asia (29.5%). The greatest share of researchers used Minolta colorimeters (58.8%), while 26.3% of them used Hunter devices. Most reports were on cheese (31.0%) followed by fermented products (21.2%). Moreover, the highest number of papers reported color data of milk and milk products made from cow’s milk (44.81%). As expected, goat’s cheese was the brightest (L* = 87.1), while cow’s cheese was the yellowest (b* = 17.4). Most importantly, it appeared that c…

Evaluation of image processing technique as an expert system in mulberry fruit grading based on ripeness level using artificial neural networks (ANNs…

2020

Abstract Image processing and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been applied to analyze, evaluate and classify mulberry fruit according to their ripeness (unripe, ripe, and overripe). A total of 577 mulberries were graded by an expert and the images were captured by an imaging system. Then, the geometrical properties, color, and texture characteristics of each segmented mulberry was extracted using two feature reduction methods: Correlation-based Feature Selection subset (CFS) and Consistency subset (CONS). Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) were applied to classify mulberry fruit. ANN classification with the CFS subset feature extraction method res…

A touchless gestural system for extended information access within a campus

2017

In the last two decades, we have witnessed a growing spread of touchless interfaces, facilitated by higher performances of computational systems, as well as the increased availability of cheaper sensors and devices. Putting the focus on gestural input, several researchers and designers used Kinect-like devices to implement touchless gestural interfaces. The latter extends the possible deployments and usage of public interactive displays. For example, wall-sized displays may become interactive even if they are unreachable by touch. Moreover, billboard-sized displays may be placed in safe cases to avoid vandalism, while still maintaining their interactivity. Finally, people with temporary or …
